Think for a moment ...
You wouldn't go to a vet if you were sick. Well that's exactly what happens when you allow just anyone to create your professional image that will be seen by countless millions around the world.
Not everyone that claims to be a website designer actually understands all that is involved. If you have used the internet for any amount of time, take notice at how many websites end up having an unwanted scrollbar at the bottom of the page.
The designer did not plan for this to happen, but they also didn't compensate so it wouldn't, thus forcing the user to scroll just enough to be annoying. This is a result of someone not understanding web page layout. Designing a website involves alot more than just putting images and text on a page.
Let's talk Flash® for a moment. You sit and wait for a presentation to load and the result is "click here to enter". What is the point of all the dazzle to get a simple entry link?

Knowing how to write code has advantages.
It is important that our websites are hand coded in a text editor, like notepad. Many designers choose to use a click and drag program, known as a WYSIWYG [ What You See Is What You Get ], to build a website.
Using a WYSIWYG program does have drawbacks. One drawback is, it tends to overinflate and add unwanted, unnecessary things to the code. Look here to see what we mean.
By overloading the code, a file that is larger in size is produced. Not only that, but it's not clear code for editing. Understanding how to write code is also quite useful to interpret and adjust script elements.
Selecting a designer that knows how to write code versus one that uses a click and drag program should be a factor in your decision.
